Anniversary Gifts - Forty-Second Anniversary

By: Michael Russell

Well, last year was fun wasn’t it? You got to give your spouse a nice chunk of land for your forty-first anniversary. Now you have the pleasure of getting your spouse a piece of real estate to put on it. Yes, this year your anniversary gift kind of continues with the theme of places to live or just play some golf on. They call it improved real estate.

For those wondering what improved real estate is, it’s just that. It’s property that has been improved to some degree. Maybe it’s been refurnished. Maybe there’s been room added. Maybe a whole new wing was added. Maybe you had the roof replaced. Improved is just that, improved and there are lots of ways to improve on a piece of property so if you need some ideas, you’ve come to the right place.

Home improvement is a very big thing. Heck, they made a whole TV show out of it with Tim Allen called “Home Improvement” so obviously it’s a hot topic and the truth is, homeowners are always looking for ways to make improvements on their home. If you’ve been married 42 years, hopefully by this time you do have a piece of property of your own. If not, here is your chance to get it.

Remember last year when you bought a piece of land? Well, if that’s all you have then maybe this is the year to build a nice home on it. Because the land itself was already bought, thus the catch, you can put a whole new home on it and still consider it improved since the land was already there and technically yours. Okay, it’s a slippery slope but it does work. Yes, there is a lot of work involved. You’re going to have to get permits, hire an architect, contractors, workers and a lot of material. Did we mention that this is also very expensive? Yes, it’s that too. Building a home from scratch is a big project. But imagine the look on your spouse’s face when it’s all done. No, don’t try to keep this as a surprise. You’ll never do it.

If the idea of building a home from scratch is a little daunting then you might want to consider purchasing what they call a fix-er-up-er. This is a home that is basically put together but needs a lot of work. Maybe it needs a new roof. Maybe the plumbing and electrics need a complete overhaul. The good thing about buying this kind of home is that you can get it very cheap and after it is completely redone, you can sell it, if you want and make a nice little profit. There are actually people who buy fix-er-up-ers and fix them up in order to make their regular income.

If even that idea is a little too much for you, you can simply redo the home you have now. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Maybe you just want to redecorate a room in the house or put in storm windows. The job doesn’t have to be a big one.

Whatever you decide to do for this anniversary, after it’s done, you will be very happy that you did it. There’s nothing quite like a new home, or at least part of a home.
