Anniversary Gifts - Forty-Seventh Anniversary

By: Michael Russell

After 47 years of marriage, you could probably write a book. Well, don’t be surprised by this year’s anniversary gift. You may not be writing any books but you’re going to be looking at quite a few of them in order to make your decision. You got it. This year’s anniversary gift idea is books.

One would think that this is probably the easiest gift in the world to get. After all, there are a million book stores in the world and each one is filled with probably that many books. So what could be easier than just walking into one of these establishments and walking out with the latest hard cover mystery? Well, if only it were that easy. Don’t forget, you want to put some thought into this gift. So here’s your first thought.

What does your spouse like to read? For that matter, does your spouse like to read at all?

Because we live in a society that mostly demands instant gratification, the kind that you really only get from TV and movies, the fine are of reading has been lost on many people. This is why there are so many campaigns today to get people interested in reading again. Whether or not those campaigns are working is a matter of opinion. Still, when it comes to getting your spouse you’d better have a decent idea what your spouse likes to read. How do you do this?

For starters, look around the house. Certainly, over the years, if your spouse is a reader, there are plenty of books for you to inspect. What’s there? Does your spouse like to read a certain type of book like a mystery or is the house filled with the works of Charles Dickens? By simply inspecting what’s lying around, this should give you a decent idea of what kind of book to get.

What if you do if your spouse is just not a reader? Well, there are many reasons for that. It could be that your spouse just never developed an interest or maybe just never had the time to go to a book store if their job kept them busy 60 hours a week. Certainly, your spouse has interests. If it’s your wife and she doesn’t read but likes to cook, there’s no reason why you have to buy a novel. There are plenty of cookbooks to choose from. She might like to get a new one. What about for the guys? Many men are just not readers. They’d prefer to just sit in front of the tube and watch the latest football game. Well, if football is all they’re interested in, why not pick up a good book about one of the stars of the game? Just make sure it has plenty of photos. Guys who love football probably love books with lots of photos. Less reading.

The truth is, just because your partner isn’t a reader doesn’t mean you can’t get a book that he or she won’t enjoy. Everybody has interests and just about every interest is in print. It’s just a matter of finding it. Once you do, you’ll have an anniversary gift that will be made to order.
