Genetically Modified Crops to Make Ethanol

By: Lance Winslow

There are many environmental issues that must be discussed if America is to grow her own fuel. Specifically if we grow ethanol to replace gasoline and therefore breaking our addiction to foreign Middle Eastern oil and we must consider exactly how this will be done. We will need specially genetically modified crops to make ethanol which do not use too much water.

We also wish to make sure that the fiber content is extremely high. And this means we will not be able to use regular types of corn crops that we currently use to eat. We need to use terminator seeds to prevent messing up wild blends of corn, which currently are available through Monsanto; they are called terminator seeds.

And additionally we must make sure that we do not have crop failures due to long-term droughts, severe weather storms or catastrophic wildfires which we have seen in the Midwest in 2006. If we make terminator seeds that are genetically modified to be fire resistance and extremely high in fiber this may be possible.

But is that too much to ask from a seed? Because while we are on the subject we also need to make sure that we have seeds, which do not require too many nitrates or pesticides to grow.

We need to keep down the amount of algae blooms in the ecosystem in the Gulf of Mexico. It would be wise if we can wrap all the important things that must be done into one seed and plan and prepare from there. Please consider all this in 2006.
