Lonely This Holiday Season? Try Online Dating!

By: Rebekah Spicer

Holidays are a time to spend with family and people you love. Unfortunately, while most people are gathering for family feasts, parties, and kisses under the mistle-toe, some singles will be sitting all alone at home. These are the people who have no close family, and no one to share the holiday season with. Are you going to be sitting alone this Christmas Eve? Are you looking for a special someone to bring in the New Year with? Perhaps now is the time to take another look at online dating and give it a try!

How do you do this? First, find a good quality online dating site. Check out the different websites listed on review sites where members can rate dating websites. Take a visit to each of the websites and sign up for the free trial period (usually anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks). During this time, you will be able to evaluate whether or not you think that dating service is right for you.

After you have chosen a quality dating site, create your profile. Be sure to be honest, and give details about yourself. Stay away from trite phrases, and make yourself shine. For example, instead of saying: “I am a musician,” say “I play the piano and especially enjoy playing the classics such as Bach and Beethoven in my spare time.” Your profile is your way of allowing potential dates to get to know who you are.

Add a good, crisp, clear, attractive photo of yourself. No glamour shots, just a great picture. Get candid shots–pictures of you participating in your favorite hobby, hanging out with your friends, at work. . .let them speak about you! Remember, your photographs are the first impression someone will get of you.

Then, you are ready to meet people. Most dating sites have thousands of members. New members sign up on a daily basis. You should have no shortage of interesting people to chat with–and perhaps form a relationship with. Don’t limit yourself to one person right away; get to know a few people. Try not to set too many geographical limits either. Remember, true love may be a few states away–if one of you is willing to move, distance really shouldn’t be an issue.

This year, as you set up the tree and go shopping for gifts, you will have reason not to be discouraged about your singleness. Next year may be the year that you too are happily kissing the love of your life under the mistletoe.
