Looters Are Short Sided

It is a known fact that humans like to get more and do less? When left to their own devices they so often are short sided in this innate tendency. To illustrate my point, let us consider the looting going on in New Orleans, Louisiana or should we say what is left of it. We know that Americans are so generous, we gave 1 Billion Dollars after 9-11, we gave hundreds of millions after the Christmas Eve Tsunami in Indonesia. I wager to say that Americans would have and perhaps may still give 1 Billion of personal monies to the victims of The Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. It is our way, we stick together thru thick or thin, in good health or poor, we are all in this together with those in New Orleans Soup Bowl.
The looters who acquired what a free TV, tools, some guns, new shoes and various electronic devices got something for nothing indeed. But what did they give up in return, I guarantee much more than they stole. They have lost the support of many Americans, even divided rich and poor, blacks and whites in their looting. How so? Well there is talk in middle class America and people are saying, no way in hell will I send money to New Orleans. Why? Because they saw thieves on TV, they did not see stranded folks without food or water they saw a reality and it bothered them. In my calculations these looters have cost at least 1 billion dollars in personal monies from average everyday Americans who would have sent in cash and gifts to help. Those who stole and looted cost many good folks the support they truly needed after coming back to flattened houses.
I was in Starbucks today talking with some folks who were re-considering going to the Gulf Coast to help, they were on their way to and were now balking at helping; but why? Why would you turn your back on those in need? Well they put it bluntly, they do not need my help, they seem to be helping themselves to all sorts of things? Referring of course to the looters and thieves.
It is interesting how bad choices keep people down. First they failed to leave under mandatory evacuation then they decided to steal, now they demand we come and get them? Yet, they were told to evacuate and if they couldn’t that the police would pick them up and take them to the Superdome. People are often where they are in life due to choices they make and even the most bleeding heart liberals of all are starting to wake up and see the truth? We are told to help and send money; are you going to send in money? As it stands over 75% of the people I talked to today said “NO” they were not. Not after the looting they saw.
One has to wonder why a human who wants more for less would not see the forest for the trees or choose to loot and catch a disease? Think on this, I beg you please!
