Picking the Right Color of Rose for your Loved One
By: Gail Leino
Whether you are picking up a bouquet of Roses for a graduation, or an anniversary you need to make sure you are picking the right color of rose for your loved one. Rose colors have different meanings.
Roses are available in a wide range of colors and while you may be tempted to buy any old one that strikes you there’s a chance you could be sending the wrong message when you select a rose for that special loved one.
All red roses mean love and beauty, courage and respect. Think of the red rose as a symbol of the deeper more mature relationship. The white rose is fairly obvious. In western culture the color white is typically associated spirituality and purity or innocence. It’s a very popular color in wedding flowers or for parents to give their children on special formal occasions. The white rose also stands for silence and secrecy and reverence and humility. Usually the situation that you give the roses in will indicate which meaning is appropriate. The white rosebud can also stand for the innocence of a girl’s youth.
The pink rose is for appreciation. It can be a material representation of the idea of ‘thanks.’ It can also mean perfect happiness and can indicate that you have a crush on someone.
The yellow rose is the safe rose, that is if you aren’t sure exactly where you stand with someone you can always give the yellow rose. It means happiness, friendship, and can indicate a new beginning. While orange roses a mixed form of yellow and red indicates desire, and action.
If you want you can mix and match rose colors to give different messages. Putting Red and White Roses together indicates unity. A thornless rose indicates love at first sight, and its color can say something about the relationship, such as being yellow can indicate you are ready to begin a relationship.
