Prepare for Your First Online Dating Experience
By: Claire Brent
There are many reasons why a person would choose to date online rather, or in addition to dating in person. After all, online dating is based on your own schedule and can be as personal or impersonal as you would like. When preparing for your first online dating experience, there are a few things to consider that will help make the experience a positive one.
Know Your Audience
Dating online can be a great way to get to know someone without having to reveal too much of yourself all at once. With the privacy that the internet affords, you can keep certain personal details to yourself until you feel more comfortable or until you feel you’ve gotten to know someone better. Its important to keep in mind that not everyone who is on a dating website is genuine, or telling the truth about themselves. Approach online dating with an air of caution, making sure not to reveal any details about your location or other information about yourself that would make it easy for someone to find you. Even if you’ve chosen someone to get to know better, let the process take its time and gradually reveal information one piece at a time. A person with only good intentions will respect this and will most likely be doing the same thing.
Limit Your Expectations
When dating online, it’s important to look at the whole process as more of a casual one rather than as a potential, actual soul mate connection. Online dating will take time, sometimes as much, if not more, time than actual person-to-person dating and, just as in an offline relationship, things may simply not work out. This is not meant to discourage online daters, because there are a number of advantages to dating online, however its important to go into it with a little perspective and open-mindedness.
Be Equipped
When preparing for your first online dating experience, there are a few things to have ready. Most dating sites offer the option of uploading a picture of yourself, so it’s good to have one ready that you don’t mind other people seeing. Your picture will be the first impression that most people get, so make it a good one. It doesn’t have to be professional one, but make sure it is a picture that really resembles the true you.
Also, a high-speed internet connection and possibly even a webcam are two other things that will help the online dating process along. Using outdated connections such as dial-up will make online, real time chatting more difficult, so, if you plan to really put a lot of time and effort into online dating, it may be a good idea to speed up your internet connection. Webcams are a great tool for allowing online daters to see each other face-to face. Expect that any online relationship that you may encounter will want to move to the next level and having a webcam will bring you as close to the other person as you can get without actually meeting them in person.
