Project Green: Henderson, Nevada

By: Peter Portero

With Henderson, Nevada growing so quickly, there are many people worried that the area will soon lose all of its green space to high rise condos and sky scraping office towers. To help avoid this from happening, the city has taken on Project Green. The project is meant to restore a specific area of land in Henderson and to protect it forever. The land is actually located between Arroyo Grande Boulevard and Pecos Road. The area is quite unique because floodwater flows from the mountains of the southern part of Henderson through Las Vegas Wash and finally ending up in Lake Mead.

There are several phases of Project Green with each one having its specific tasks to be done during that time. Some of the main objects included re-establishing the natural and native plant species of the area. In addition, the project hopes to help re-establish the native riparian life there as well. Lastly, Project Green wants to include a trail for the community to use and enjoy. There should be a place for the citizens to understand the beauty of the natural land and the project thinks the trail would suffice.

Project Green is something that is funded by many different places. There are federal and state grants being used for Project Green. In addition there are donations being given monthly to go to the project. The whole organizational aspect of Project Green relies on volunteers and other sponsors. Of course, after the area is returned to its natural state, the organizers plan to maintain it only as absolutely necessary.
