Relationship Advice: Are Co-Workers Dangerous to Your Relationship?

By: Jeff Herring

Relationships take constant maintenance and attention. There are many threats to your relationship each and every day. Believe it or not, your work world can be one of the biggest threats.

A recent poll

Check out some of these statistic from a recent Harris Poll:

31 percent believe it is appropriate to date a co-worker

31 percent of employed U.S. adults believe it is appropriate to date a co-worker

27 percent have kissed a co-worker

2 percent said they have sent flowers or a gift on Valentine’s Day

30 percent of working adults said they have dated a co-worker

24 percent said they feel comfortable discussing their romantic relationships with their work colleagues

There are lots of dangerous things to be found in the statistics above. For one, there is a reason for the popular saying, cleaned up a little bit for our purposes, that you do not mess around in your own backyard.

Getting involved with some one at work is a prescription for complication, especially if this is someone that is in a supervisory position over you or even worse, if you are in a supervisory position over them.

It’s the last statistic that seems to cause the most pain, talking with co-workers about the inner workings of your relationship. I’ve heard the story hundreds of times in my coaching and counseling office: the affair that began as seemingly innocent sharing of relationship struggles with a co-worker.
