Remembering Rita the Red Headed Horrific Hurricane

By: Lance Winslow

On what should have been a perfect Saturday in the first few days of fall, we watched the mighty City of Houston stand tall. The winds and rain and flooding on our television sets were almost too much to bare after all it had only been 4-weeks since the last Cat Five Hurricane Katrina. This time it was Houston’s turn as Hurricane Rita Roared on shore, yet at the last minute the Hurricane downgraded and turned North. We saw the areas between Houston and Lake Charles take the brunt of it, as they started flooded prior to the winds and the storm surge which literally took out out homes and businesses along the coast coastal elevations which we less than ten feet above sea level. We saw Interstate 10 the most traveled Freeway in our Civilization turn into a river in many places, which looked more like the Port of Houston Canal. Later when the water subsided we saw it had survived for the most part with only a few breaks.

We heard of Oil Rigs toppled and wondered about the future of our personal pocket book as gas prices soared. The flooding on the coast was not only in our Nation’s third largest city and additional areas of the Gulf Coast, but in our tear ducts as well as we joined our President in an emotional speech of what was so surreal. A second huge Hurricane in under a month hitting the shores of the Gulf Coast, with still more Hurricane Season to go. A mighty city brought to her knees as everyone left as evacuees. But in Texas they are as tough as they come even though, when they came back, they did not came back to none. The storm moved North and it was done. But the flooding continued for days to run.

As we see the 2005 Hurricane come to a close, we knew there would be more before the last Hurricanes arose. That is all over now and we know who we are. Adversity builds character; this nation has come far. We will re-build as we always do, nothing can stop those who believe, so we will build stronger, that we can also achieve. Think on this.
