Sacred Scriptures
By: Saundra L. Washington
Of all the many books this world contains there is only one that claims to be a direct revelation from God, telling us of Himself and His purpose for our lives. Sacred Scriptures is a unique Book in that it is a collection of books written by human authors inspired by God and are an account of God’s revelation and plan of salvation for the human race.
What we learn from the Bible itself is that it is the inspired writings from
God. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking,
correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be
thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17. All Scripture,
both the Old Testament and the New, is inspired by God. The New Testament is
witness to the reliability of the Old Testament, repeatedly quoting the words of
the Old Testament. These two books within the Book stand on the witness of each
other.
The apostle Peter declares: “ For prophecy never had its origin in the will
of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
2 Peter 1:21. So certain is this truth that such expressions as “Thus saith the
Lord,” “God said,” and similar assertions, are found more than 2,500 times in
the Bible.
Typical of these is David’s exclamation: “The Spirit of the LORD spoke
through me; his word was on my tongue.” 2 Samuel 23:2. God spoke His eternal
truths through holy men who were called to prophets and apostles. The power of
the Holy Spirit came on them. By visions, dreams, and through other means, there
were directed to speak and write.
So we can say that the Bible is a very human book and yet, it is a divine book
as well, for it is the only book in the entire world that claims to be
“God-breathed”. It is humanity’s precious gift from God. It is our roadmap and guide on our journey to the New Jerusalem.
US Presidents on the Bible
George Washington: “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without
God and the Bible.”
John Quincy Adams: “So great is my veneration of the Bible, that the
earlier my children begin to read it the more confident will be my hope that
they will prove useful citizens of their country and respectable members of
society.
Andrew Jackson: “That book, sir, is the rock on which our republic
rests.”
Abraham Lincoln: “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given
to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through
this book.”
Woodrow Wilson: “I ask every man and woman in this audience that from
this day on they will realize that part of the destiny of America lies in their
daily perusal of this great Book.”
Herbert Hoover: “The whole of the inspiration of our civilization springs
from the teachings of Christ and the lessons of the Prophets. To read the Bible
for these fundamentals is a necessity of American life.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower: “To read the Bible is to take a trip to a fair land
where the spirit is strengthened and faith renewed.”
Theodore Roosevelt: “A
thorough understanding of the Bible is better than a college education.”
