The Basics of Dating
By: Ron Zvagelsky
In the most basic terms, dating is when a pair of potential lovers meet at an established time and place, in order to better understand one another. Dating usually begins in the teenage years, and will continue until a person finds a lover with whom they are able to settle down with for the long haul. Alas, like most good things, it quite often must come to an end. It has been said that dating is about dumping – that the only way to find your perfect match is to go through a couple of not-so-perfect relationships to know that those people aren’t for you, and to better define what you are looking for. In order to get more successful relationships, it is important to understand certain aspects of dating.
The first and most important thing to understand about dating is to never give up. Everyone has at least one person that is the perfect match for them. If you do get dumped, sure it’s a bad feeling – but you should realize that you weren’t really meant to spend the rest of your life with someone who does not want to be there with you. It is vital to one’s dating career to not get depressed about their situation- to be able to get over that last relationship, and start up as soon as possible. Love is not exactly easy to come by, and the longer you wait, the less chance you will have of meeting that perfect someone (not to say that it isn’t impossible).
Another important aspect of dating is to not look at physical attributes before personality traits. It is important to be able to look at a person and love them, but not because they are just attractive. Also, it is important to not look at “social hierarchies”. Never suppress feelings for a person because your friends tell you that you’re better than that person, or never shy away from asking someone who you consider to be better than you for fear that they will reject your request. So if you have feelings for somebody, ask them out for a drink or some coffee, what’s the worst that could happen?
