The Physically Challenged Often Do Not Feel as Such
By: Lance Winslow
Many physically challenged folks in the United States do not feel physically challenged and do not even consider the term “handicapped” in their vocabulary. It is best if their closest friends and families understand this and do not treat them as incapable or handicapped.
Hopefully more people can understand this concept in our society. Can you see that? I can see that. This is why I would not treat anyone in a walker or wheelchair in that way either. Also I do not feel it is fair for someone who is physically challenged to demand something simply for being different in a certain aspect of life. That leads to crutches and lack of expectation, which is the real evil in all of this. You can see it in our society and it is bothersome. From minority treatment of low expectations to sports, where each kid gets to play the same time in the game regardless of ability or where superstars sit on the bench and the game is lost because everyone MUST have equal time, then may I ask; “why bother to keep score?”
Many of us are careful to respect the physically challenged and open the doors for them and such things. We should, as it is the right thing to do. Please think on these things and consider all this as you move through 2006.
