Uno de Mayo and the Age of Disrespect

By: Clyde Granger

Did you notice less traffic on your commute to work this morning? Imagine moving below the Rio Grande and working there, would you take a day off to wave the US flag and protest the local government? Ever question why US airports have been making announcements in Spanish and English?

Why were recent linguistic concessions made, but our grandparents had to learn English? Should being an illegal immigrant be a felony? There are a lot of points to ponder today while Iran “rattles the saber” and Exxon Mobil “rolls in the dough.” There will be many rallies today over a number of issues, including an end to the Dafur conflict.

Getting back to immigration and immigrant rights, our family elders told us the journey from the boat to US citizenship was not easy. Jobs were not the best and learning English was difficult. All of them told us that the journey was worth it. So, what is the issue? Is it “entitlement” or is it unfairness on the part of the US government?

After 911, all of the borders have been tightened. This is not a policy based upon ethnic bias, but a reaction to violence from terrorist groups outside the United States. If you cannot understand the reason, what further explanation is necessary? If you do not want to live in the US, there is plenty of space elsewhere. If our elected officials were honest, they would work toward prosecuting those corporate giants who hire illegal immigrants, in the first place. That’s too much to ask at a time when jobs within the US are a field of minimum wage paying opportunities.

With one third of the kids in US high schools failing, it is time to open up room for them at Walmart, fast food restaurants, and doing migrant farm work. So, this should balance things out. It gives the under achieving American kids a place to get a job. It’s time for the under achievers to pick up the slack and work a low paying job.

None of us likes to lose our jobs, see fuel costs soar, work without health insurance, suffer in this present economy, or listen to people who feel they should be entitled to everything. If you don’t like living in the USA; please leave and we won’t have to deal with traffic jams.

The idea that we should change everything around to cater to a particular ethic group is disrespectful to all the rest of us. The United States is made up of many cultures. Protest if you wish, but if there is any justice left in the USA you will be deported tomorrow. Smile for the camera today, while the INS looks you up on Tuesday.
