Collecting used materials normally regarded as waste to be reused and remade into new products is known as recycling. Old materials are sorted out according to their raw material base and their ability to be recycled.
One of the major reasons why recycling has become popular is protection of the environment. Reusing material not only prevents waste but also reduces the consumption of new raw materials. It also makes economic sense, as it is cheaper to produce new products from reused or recycled materials. The kind of materials that are commonly recycled include glass, paper, aluminum, asphalt and steel.
Growing consumerism has led to growing waste. Disposing of waste has therefore become a major problem. Landfills, the commonest method of waste disposal, have begun occupying too much space and incinerators have their own set of problems. An alternative to this is recycling.
Industrial consumption of energy and water has been significantly reduced thanks to consumer recycling. It takes huge amounts of power or fuel to produce materials like aluminum or glass. When these are recycled, it means preventing a large amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
Reusing certain commodities is one way of recycling. Items like glass bottles for instance, where the bottle is reduced to a raw material and used to make a new glass bottle. Organic household waste, especially waste such as leaves is often collected and heaped up to form compost.
Although there are many misconceptions about what materials can and cannot be recycled, recycling on the whole has become an intricate part of waste management for most parts of the country. Today, 28 percent of waste is recycled, a rate that has almost doubled during the past 15 years. Certain specific materials, especially, have shown a great increase: paper, 42%, soft drink and beer cans, 55%, soft drink bottles 40%, etc. Today, the country has over 56,000 reuse and recycling facilities all over.
