Wedding Memories

Weddings and memories of weddings evoke laughter and/or tears, and not all the tears are tears of joy. However, details from a person’s wedding or from one attended can be used to give power to a story about romance or love, since the “ideal” love story results in a wedding. A few illustrations can also help a person avoid some pitfalls when planning a wedding.
One young woman, when asked about her views on weddings, stated, “Weddings are expensive things… especially when one has to attend three within a month and be a bridesmaid in each. Luckily, one bridesmaid dress is ‘whatever you want, so long as it’s red,’ another one will probably be a simple skirt and sweater combo, and the third bride-to-be is deciding whether she wants bridesmaids or not.”
Let’s see, lessons to be learned: Make it easy and simple for the bride’s maids; and make decisions early enough that friends aren’t left hanging and wondering.
A writer could take each part of what brides want and weave it into a story. Imagine, for example, what a tragedy or comedy could result from “whatever you want, so long as it’s red.” Talk about the possibilities of misunderstandings and wide range of outfits, imagine one numbskull appearing in red, long johns, or another in red halter-top and skin-tight mini skirt.
One man sent the following comment: “So like I said, my first wife was over two hours late for our wedding. The ceremony was on July 4 and, fortunately, we had the place (the ruins of a mansion designed by Jefferson) all day. The piano player, rabbi, and caterers were cool about it (though they did bill us), and I kept the crowd entertained with improv stand-up comedy.
“Oh, why was she late? Massive debilitating respiratory infection - was on serious antibiotics, but they hadn’t quite kicked in yet. Of course, the wedding was probably the best day of the entire (short) marriage… “
The lessons that could be learned from that memory could be anything from provide the bride with an escort to be sure she arrives, to be sure the wedding should take place at all.
The possible story details are many. The plot could include a bride fighting her way out of a sick bed to get to the wedding, or the groom’s comedy routine. That little story contains many possible plots and/or details to use.
